Steinway Competition

 

Steinway & Sons is proud to announce a new competition for young pianists ages 18 and under, and Steinway Piano Gallery Detroit is pleased to have been identified as a regional host venue. This  prestigious competition offers young pianists the opportunity to compete for up to $1,000 in prize money and official recognition from an iconic world-class piano brand.

The competition will take place at Steinway Piano Gallery, 2700 E. West Maple Rd., Commerce Township, MI 48390, on

 

Friday, March 23, 2018 at 4:00 PM and Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

 

First, second, and third place winners will receive commemorative medals and national recognition on the Steinway & Sons website. All participants will receive a certificate of participation and judges’ comments. The winners will receive their awards and recognition at the mandatory winner’s concert at Steinway Piano Gallery, where they will each perform 20 minutes of music for the public on

 

Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM

First Place Prizes

Division I  $400
Division II  $700

Division III  $1000

 

Requirements

At least two pieces of contrasting style and period. There is a chance that judges will need to cut off the performance during the audition time.

• Division I: Ages 9 and under (max 8 minutes)
• Division II: Ages 10-13 (max 10 minutes)
• Division III: Ages 14-18 (max 15 minutes)

Age requirements apply to applicant’s age as of March 19, 2018. Applicants must reside in the United States or Canada. Qualifying competitors must perform live with their music memorized in order to participate in the competition. Students are only allowed to participate at one audition location. Steinway & Sons and Steinway-authorized showrooms reserve the right to photograph, record, or video participants during the competition and use these documents for marketing purposes. Steinway & Sons reserves the right to the interpretation of the Terms and Conditions of the Regulations.

 

Scheduling

Auditions are arranged by divisions, beginning with Division 1 on Friday and continuing with Division 2 and 3 on Saturday. Please submit accurate performance times! Schedules are based on these times. Students will be notified of their application time on March 15th. All applicants will be provided an opportunity (at least 20 minutes) to play on the competition instrument before their audition. Please contact Steinway Piano Gallery at 248.560.9200 no later than March 13th to schedule this practice opportunity. (Opportunities are available on a first-come basis and will fill up quickly).

Registration deadline is February 23, 2018

Audition slots are limited. Please register early to ensure participation.
