Steinway Competition Winners’ Concert & Award Ceremony

 

Steinway Competition Winners:

FIRST PLACE:

 

Ethan Mihaescu, Division 1 – Ages 9 and under

Ethan Mihaescu, born in January 2011, showed an early interest and understanding of music.  At the age of four, he began taking piano lessons with Shuyu Lin and later with her husband Dizhou Zhao.  Ethan was recognized for his early talent during public performances and competitions.  In 2018, he received first place honors in the Crescendo International Music Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York.  Ethan loves discovering and tackling new music, and his favorite composers are Bach and Chopin.  He plans to continue to practice and improve his piano skills in the years to come.

 

Salem Wang, Division 2 – Ages 10 to 13

Salem Wang is a 7th grader in Farmington Hills who currently studies piano with Mary Siciliano. She is a passionate pianist who has won prizes in many piano competitions, including first place in the 2018 Tuesday Musicale Student League Competition, the MMTA Concerto Competition in 2017, and the 2017 Schoolcraft College Honors Auditions. In 2017, she also won second place in the Albion College International Competition, MMTA State Finals, and honorable mention in the MTNA Competition. In addition, Salem plays the violin and performed with a selected student orchestra, at the Farmington Young Classical Musician showcase.

Heather Gu, Division 3 – Ages 14 to 18

Heather Gu, 18, is a 12th grader in Troy Schools District.  She started learning and playing piano at age 5, and is currently studying piano with Professor Logan Skelton from the University of Michigan and previously under Mary Siciliano.  At age 11, she has made her orchestral debut with Dearborn Symphony Orchestra to perform Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20. She also won the 2014 Rochester Symphony Orchestra Competition to play Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 1.  Heather has been named as the winner of the 2013-14 , 2015-16 and 2016-17 East Central Division Junior and Senior Piano Competitions by Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and became one of the national finalists in 2014, 2016 and 2017, respectively.  She has recently won the National 2nd Place in Senior Division of the 2017 MTNA Piano Competition. Heather also won numerous top awards, including the 2nd place of the 2016 David D. Dubois Piano Competition at BGSU, the 2nd place in Junior Division of the 2016 Thousand Islands International Piano Competition at Cape Vincent, NY., the 1st place in Junior Division of the 2012 MMTA State Finals, the winner of the 2012 and 2016 Michigan Steinway Junior and Senior Artists Competitions, and the Elementary Division of the 2011 MMTA Concerto Competition, as well as many other contests and festivals.  In addition, Heather has won the Doreen Wessel Taylor Piano Award and received a scholarship with honor from the Tuesday Musicale of Detroit in 2012, and then she won in consecutive years the first prizes in their Student League Piano Competitions.

 


SECOND PLACE:

 

Fayfay Sheng, Division 1 – Ages 9 and under

Seven-year old Fayfay started piano playing at age four with her mother Dr. Peng Chen. Since the fall of 2016, she has been studying with Dr. Amy Cheng, who is on the faculty of School of Music, Theater and Dance at University of Michigan. She also receives occasional guidance from her father Bright Sheng.

Fayfay’s progress on piano playing has been impressive. She has won the Sonata/Sonatina Festival in Feburary, 2018, and was named second place of 2018 Steinway & Sons Piano Competition in March.

Fayfay is in the first grade at Emerson School and is active in learning swimming, ballet and Chinese, and is fond of drawing.

 

Jonathan Shi, Division 2 – Ages 10 to 13

Jonathan Shi started taking piano lessons with renowned piano teacher Ms. Marta Pietrzyk when he was 6 years old. He won numerous awards in piano competitions, such as 2016 Michigan MMTA Concerto Competition, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Metro Detroit Music League Young Artist Piano Competition, 2015 Carmel Debut International Piano Competition, 2014 Sonatina & Sonata International Youth Piano Competition, American Guild of Music Competitions. In November 2014 he had his first recital at Carnegie Hall. He is an active member of Detroit Tuesday Musicale Student League and won 2018 Young Artist Competition. His favorite pianist is Arthur Rubinstein. He is the concert master in middle school orchestra and plays first violin in a violin trio.  He frequently performs on piano and violin at local senior homes. He enjoys reading, playing soccer and basketball with his friends. In his spare time he likes to play with his cats Sophie and Wolfie.

 

Annie Tang, Division 3 – Ages 14 to 18

Annie Tang is currently a 9th grader at Troy High School in Troy, Michigan. She started her piano study with Ms. Faye Mao when she was seven years old. Annie has been actively engaged in piano performance and is recognized by many piano events she has participated in.

In her recent years, Annie has placed in several competitions. She was one of the few selected winners at the Schoolcraft Honors Auditions for Piano and performed at the Schoolcraft Piano Recital in both 2016 and 2017. She was also selected as one of the top five pianists at the Junior Piano Performance Competition in Michigan sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association in 2017. In the same year, Annie received two other awards: 2nd Place in the Junior II group at the 32nd Annual Chinese Fine Arts Music Festival in Honor of Confucius, and 3rd Place at the Albion College International Piano Festival and performed in the Winner’s Recital.

Aside from piano competitions, Annie is a fine flute player and she is currently principal chair in Concert Band at Troy High School. She also enjoys synchronized swimming and reading.

 


THIRD PLACE:

 

Montgomery Moore, Division 1 – Ages 9 and under

Montgomery Moore is 8 years old and is a homeschooled 3rd grader living in Forest, Ohio.  He studies piano with Dr. Margarita Denenburg at Heidelberg University.  Montgomery also enjoys participating in 4-H and spending time with the family’s four dogs.  He loves all piano music, but J.S. Bach and Chopin are his favorite composers.  Montgomery loves to practice and hopes to be a pianist when he grows up.

 

Richard Shao, Division 2 – Ages 10 to 13

Richard Shao is 13 years old and a seventh grader at Detroit Country Day Middle School. He currently studies piano with Professor Arthur Greene at the University of Michigan. Richard was the winner of the MTNA/MMTA Junior Piano Competition in 2016 and the alternate (second place) of the MTNA/MMTA Junior Piano Competition in 2017.

 

Frederick Zhao, Division 3 – Ages 14 to 18

Frederick Zhao, a 16-year-old student, is currently a junior at Troy High School. The beginning of his piano journey started in Windsor, Ontario after a music teacher in his kindergarten discovered that he was an unusually fast learner who possessed perfect pitch and a strong memory.

Frederick has been studying piano under Ms. Faye Mao after his family moved to Troy, Michigan. Over the years, he has been passionate and active in piano performance and involved in numerous piano solo and duet events, festivals and competitions. Frederick’s recent performances were at Lansum International Music Festival in Los Angeles, where he received First Place in both Romantic and Contemporary division, and the 4th United States Virtuoso Artists International Piano Competition, where he was awarded First Place in both Open and Romantic division. He was also one of the twelve performers at the Annual Schoolcraft Piano Honor Recital.

Aside from his piano studies, Frederick plays the violin and is a member of the Troy School Symphony Orchestra. He also loves math, in which he was awarded Third Place in National MATHCOUNTS when in 8th grade. Among his other recreational pursuits, Frederick is an avid chess player and swimmer.

 


Honorable Mention:

Annie He, Division 2 – Ages 10 to 13

Jason Zhang is currently 15 years old and a 10th grader enrolled at Northville High School. He has been playing piano since first grade. His teacher is Mrs. Amelia Kazaryan. Except piano, currently he is in his school’s band program, as well as the jazz band where he plays tuba and trombone. He has a big passion for the composing as well. Currently he also participates in the Tuesday Musicale Student League. He has been playing school tennis as JV member. During his free time, he enjoys watching movies and hanging out with friends.
